The Boleyn King

by Laura Andersen

This is book one in the new Boleyn series. It is Laura Andersen’s debut novel. I received this book free from NetGalley. It was just released on June 4, 2013. What King is that you ask? Hmm, you don’t recall that one. Well you are right!! There wasn’t one.

This book is a based on what would have happened if Ann Boleyn and Henry VIII had produced a male heir. This is an interesting premise to base a book on. Oh yes, and not had her head chopped off!! It is helpful if you know some of the Tudor history before reading this book, because it mixes real people with some fictional ones. This book gives us a look at the many facets of court life. It contains mystery, intrigue, acts of espionage, possible treason, and love affairs. It is an interesting account of William the Boleyn King. William rules England with advice and help of three people who are closest to him. They are Dominic, his best friend, Elizabeth, his sister and Minuette. Minuette is an orphan and one of Anne’s ladies. The story becomes complicated at the end when both King William and Dominic fall in love with her.

The language seems a little modern. The author presents the story well and it is believable. Just enough of the history is mixed with the romance. I liked the surprise ending. I thought the book was over and then there was the last little part. It is a short, quick read. It only took me two days. I love the covers of both books!! Definitely worth taking a look at. I give it 3/5 stars.

Kudos to the budding author Laura Andersen! I think that this book will set the stage well for her next book!

To be released on November 26, 2013.
