The Book of Secrets

By Elizabeth Joy Arnold

Hello again to all my fellow book lovers. Welcome back. The end of summer approaches quickly and the days are getting cooler at night here. I have a treat for you to today! This book is a fabulous find! I hope you enjoy today’s review.

I received this as an e-book from NetGalley. It was released on July 2, 2013 by Bantam. I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot to offer. It is one of the best books that I have read so far this year!

Chloe and Nate, who have been married for 20 years find themselves in a marriage that has a strong base, but has some problems. The root of the problem seems to be the loss of their child. Where has Nate gone? Why did he leave? Chloe tells us the story from her point of view as she unravels the mysteries of the past and delves deeper into Nate’s hidden side. The story is cleverly presented with references to many literary works and the translation of a secret code. Oh and Nate and Chloe just happen to own a bookstore. Nate’s feelings are presented from his point of view as he writes to his son. Many deep dark family secrets are revealed as the book speeds along and I found myself wanting to find out what was going to happen next, but also not wanting it to end.

This book is gives one a good dose of childhood nostalgia. I think that many people will be able to relate to some element of the book, whether it is the excitement of one’s first reading of a book, the playacting, bicycle riding or the darker elements of living with a sick parent or a difficult father.

I really got swept up in this one. I think that I read it in 2 days! I found that the ending was predictable, but that did not detract from the story. I will not tell you what happened. It will ruin it for you. The author truly loves books and reading and it shows. I give this book a strong 5 out of 5 stars.

Have you read any of the V.C. Andrews books? She tells stories where the characters all have deep dark secrets and this book reminded me of her writing. I loved to read her books when I was in high school. We couldn’t wait for the next one to come out.
