Sunday Scoop

By M.J. Rose

Wow it is already the 8th of December!! Where has the time gone. Christmas will be here before you know it. Are you getting ready for the holidays? We do everything kind of last-minute here. The hubby is asking for me to make Xmas cookies. If you have been following along on my blog, you will realize this is somewhat of a problem for me with my diet. Not sure what to do about this?? Make a bunch of cookies and not eat them? Yeah, not very likely!!

Seduction is a book I received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. It was published May 7, 2013 by Atria books. It is the fifth book in a series. You may have heard of The Book of Lost Fragrances. M.J. Rose released this in 2012. I have not read it yet, but sounds really good!! Seduction is a mystery/suspense novel with an element of the supernatural. Spirits, re-incarnation and time warping all play a part in this one.

In 1843, novelist Victor Hugo’s beloved  nineteen-year-old daughter drowned. Ten years later, Hugo began  participating in hundreds of séance to reestablish contact with her. In the process, he claimed to have communed with the likes of Plato,  Galileo, Shakespeare, Dante, Jesus—and even the Devil himself. Hugo’s  transcriptions of these conversations have all been published. Or so it  was believed.

Recovering from her own losses, mythologist Jac L’Etoile arrives on  the Isle of Jersey—where Hugo conducted the séances—hoping to uncover a  secret about the island’s Celtic roots. But the man who’s invited her  there, a troubled soul named Theo Gaspard, has hopes she’ll help him  discover something quite different—Hugo’s lost conversations with  someone called the Shadow of the Sepulcher.

What follows is an intricately plotted and atmospheric tale of  suspense with a spellbinding ghost story at its heart, by one of  America’s most gifted and imaginative novelists. (Description from NetGalley)

I was totally swept up into this book. It is like three stories in one, but they are all tied together and connected. I like a little time traveling and a touch of the paranormal once in a while. I found it interesting that Victor Hugo was such a believer in re-incarnation. I like books with a little of real life sprinkled in. It’s also neat that it links back to a well-known writer.  The book contains many descriptions of scent and intriguing information about the developement of perfumes. I guess you could classify this as a historical novel, but it doesn’t stay in one time period. I think that this book is packed with a lot of interesting elements. I give this book a strong 4 out of 5. Kudos to M.J. Rose!!

Authors website and blog:

M.J. Rose has a new book coming out on April 8, 2014. I will have to look out for this one!!

P.S. If you enjoyed this book or if this has peaked your interest, take a look at the two novels below!!!!

This book brought to mind Octavia Butler’s book Kindred. Kindred was a time travel novel about slavery and the past. It was a very good book. I was just thinking also about the book Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark, but perhaps that is more similar to the book I am currently reading, Bellman and Black. These are two other alternate history type books.
